High Schools Students Deliver Christmas Meals to Local Families

LEO Club members from Liberty and Century High Schools met at Salernos Christmas Eve morning to deliver Christmas feasts to deserving families in Eldersburg and Sykesville.

Eleven families identified by elementary school counselors as candidates were contacted by Freedom District Lions Club Youth Outreach Chairman JR Helmick. Families interested in participating received wrapped gifts for all of their children, groceries, and today they received full Christmas Dinners with all of the trimmings. Meals were made possible through the generosity of Salernos and the included traditional items. Some of the larger families also received a ham or additional turkey provided by one of Salernos suppliers.

Christmas Eve marked the final step of the Christmas Program for the LEO's led by Paige Sudol (LHS) and Michael Capparelli (CHS). Unique to the LEO Clubs is that the project leaders make 100% of the decisions in all areas. Projects succeed or fail based on the diligence and committement of the project leader. Lion Brenda Livesay was on hand along with Aimee Helmick and several LEO parents to provide transportation of the meals.

Lions coach the project leaders when asked but they do not make decisions for the project.

Paige Sudol and Michael Caparelli did an exceptional job with this project.
