Jennifer Cherneski and Erin McDonnell’s 5^th grade class at Taneytown Elementary School, along with the assistance of the entire school, organized a canned food/hygiene item drive and held a Hurricane Hat Day to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Students at the school collected 985 hygiene products, 422 cans and over $535. The drive took place from  November 16 -  21. Hurricane Hat Day was held on November 20.

Through news articles and websites, students saw the destruction from Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast and wanted to help out. They organized the canned food drive/hygiene product drive for each homeroom and decided that monetary donations (sent to the Red Cross) would help. The food/hygiene items were sent to the Taneytown Senior Center and will be delivered very soon, all of the money will be donated to the Red Cross. These students have also researched various ways of preventing erosion along the coast and designed a model in conjunction with the STEM process. This will represent their learning of eco-friendly erosion solutions.
