The Public Service Commission (PSC) recently considered Baltimore Gas and Electrics’ (BGE) request to begin installing smart meters in its customers’ homes.

According to BGE's website, smart meters are advanced meters that identify energy consumption in more detail than a conventional meter. They look much like the electric meters that are in your home now, but their technology is far more advanced. They have the ability to communicate information via a secured network back and forth between your home and BGE.
 
Beginning in spring 2012, BGE will install state-of-the-art digital electric meters and upgrade gas meters in every home and small business in its service area, a process that will take about three years, according to the BGE website.

A Carroll County government news release reports that "many people have contacted the Carroll County Commissioners’ Office inquiring about opting out of smart meter installation."

The PSC’s recent decision allows BGE to move forward with the installation of the smart meters and allows customers to opt out of the program until the PSC has had an opportunity to investigate the matter further, according to the news release.
