BGE Smart Meter Opt Out Directions
BGE's smart meters will allow for two-way communications between your home and BGE.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) recently considered Baltimore Gas and Electrics’ (BGE) request to begin installing smart meters in its customers’ homes.
According to BGE's website, smart meters are advanced meters that identify energy consumption in more detail than a conventional meter. They look much like the electric meters that are in your home now, but their technology is far more advanced. They have the ability to communicate information via a secured network back and forth between your home and BGE.
Beginning in spring 2012, BGE will install state-of-the-art digital electric meters and upgrade gas meters in every home and small business in its service area, a process that will take about three years, according to the BGE website.
A Carroll County government news release reports that "many people have contacted the Carroll County Commissioners’ Office inquiring about opting out of smart meter installation."
The PSC’s recent decision allows BGE to move forward with the installation of the smart meters and allows customers to opt out of the program until the PSC has had an opportunity to investigate the matter further, according to the news release.
If you choose to opt out, contact BGE at:

Critics say radio frequency radiation emitted by smart meters can cause sleep loss, heart palpitations, dizziness and other problems.
Not sure there has been enough test done , The idea behind the meter is solid and would save energy, but if there are health risk? On the fence.

I've seen plenty of objections based on the radio emissions, but what about BGE's ability to communicate with the meter? Will they be able to remotely shut off your power at will? What guidelines are there for this to happen? Can they lower your electric consumption from their end? These are the question that shound be asked, not about the silly radio waves.

BGE will also be able to restore your power much more quickly with a smart meter. The meter will tell them your power is out and they will be able to get to work on it more quickly. So there are pluses too.

If we decide the smart meter is not for us,is there an extra charge on our bill to keep the present meter?
