Carroll County Public Schools will be closed today, Friday, Feb. 1, due to weather conditions. Students who have already been transported will be returned home.
Parents have been notified by an email alert and calls to homes.
CCPS Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Steve Johnson told Patch that "a clipper system came through at absolutely the worst time possible."
Johnson said the school system had crews out monitoring the roads early as they try to make the decision to delay or cancel schools by 5:30 a.m.
"The roads weren't bad," Johnson said. "Then a little clipper came through around 6:15. It did more damage than it was supposed to and we re-evaluated."
"We try our very best to have the safety of students and teachers at the forefront of our decisions," Johnson said.

I spoke with Mr. Johnson on the phone and he gave me essentially the same story. He is a VERY nice man, I believe his sincerity, and I appreciate his effort to explain, but it's still a hare-brained, last-minute decision that should not have been made. The more logical decision would have been to delay the start of the school day by two hours and THEN re-evaluate. The net-net of today's decision was INCREASED risk to children and more than a little inconvenience for parents. I am utterly, utterly baffled by the facile explanation of "well, we weren't sure." Risk mitigation 101, people.
I was planning to home school my sons next year anyway, but this just cements it.
