The Carroll County Chamber of Commerce recognized 278 teachers at its annual Outstanding Teacher Awards program this week. The following teachers received Outstanding Teacher Awards:

• Barbara Cohen, First Grade Teacher, Eldersburg Elementary School

• Laura Doolan, English Teacher, Westminster High School

• Thomas McHugh, English Teacher, Century High School

• Hannah McNett, Science Teacher, North Carroll High School

• Kenneth Mihalyov, Science Teacher, West Middle School

• Salvatore Picataggi, Health Education Teacher, Winters Mill High School

• April Sexton, Science Teacher, Shiloh Middle School

• Jennifer Yinger, Kindergarten Teacher, Westminster Elementary School.

The Outstanding Teacher Awards recognize the men and women of the Carroll County Public School System who represent excellence in the teaching profession, acording to a news release.

The Carroll County Teacher of the Year will be chosen from the eight individuals receiving the Chamber’s Outstanding Teacher Award. That candidate will be Carroll County’s representative for the Maryland Teacher of the Year program.

The 2013 Carroll County Teacher of the Year will be named during the Board of Education’s employee recognition ceremony on April 25. 

In addition, the Chamber of Commerce awarded Wilhelm Scholarships to teachers to assist in their continuing education. The scholarship recipients were Emily Dunn, an ESOL Resource Teacher at North Carroll High and North Carroll Middle Schools; Lara Groboski, an art teacher at Cranberry Station Elementary School; and Scott Trexler, a mathematics teacher at South Carroll High School. 

Chamber President Mike McMullin presented the Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Catherine Hood, former principal of Oklahoma Road Middle School, who retired in 2012 after 36 years of service to the Carroll County Public School System.
