Eldersburg Kmart Saved in First Round of Cuts
The store did not make the list of locations set to close by Sears Holding Corp.
The Eldersburg Kmart, located in the Carrolltown Mall, was saved from the first round of stores to be closed by Sears Holding Corp., with more cuts and announcements possibly to come.
The company published a list of 79 Kmart and Sears stores to be closed on their website Thursday afternoon.
This is only the first round of cuts, with the possibility of the list reaching 100 to 120 stores.
The Sears located at 7200 Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City is the only Maryland store slated to be closed.
After a disappointing year, Sears Holding Corp. announced Tuesday that it is closing more than 100 Kmart and Sears stores, according to a company statement.
The closings are aimed at “marginally performing” stores and are expected to generate $140 to $170 million of cash as the net inventory in these stores is sold, according to a company statement.

Disappointing...That mall is an eye sore and it tears the community down

Black Oak Associates seems content on letting K-Mart remain and the hollow shell of Carrolltown Mall to continue to decay around it. Let's hope the 'Super K' is included in the second round of cuts.

This is a nice store! Why would anyone want it to close? I don't understand the previous comments. Customer service isn't the greatest, but the store is clean and well stocked. Yes, the mall itself is pitiful, but the Kmart is not the problem!

Amy, the problem is that there is no chance for the mall buildings to be razed by the current owner and a new nicer shopping center to be built until Kmart closes. In the meantime we're stuck with a horrible looking mall with no chance of improvement. That's why so many people want the Kmart to close. It's not that we want the people who work there to lose their jobs - we just want the eyesore that's the Carrolltowne Mall to be improved.

It's too expensive for one. Items there can be purchased elsewhere for far less money. My husband makes a good point, if they tear down that mall and put up something better, it will bring much more traffic and much more rifraf.

Further, is there really enough land for a new mall? I am so glad they are putting the new Super Walmart in Randallstown and not in Eldersburg.

Rejoice and mark my words as Kmart will be gone in 1-3 years! The writing is on the wall as two other "old school" stores are closing up shop in the same center. It is just a matter of time before people realize that there is no point in going there. The problem is all of the "elders" in Eldersburg are stubborn and loyal to the big K. Denny's is right there too, so it makes it easy for them to eat breakfast, hit KMart and call it a day. Plus it keeps them away from the "hustle and bustle" of the Walmart area, which is about to get even busier with Royal Farm set to open shop at Rts 26/32. Liberty Exchange looks promising and should stretch the community and place added pressure with the right mix of Kmart killers. Things are looking up as Eldersburg has a lot of room to grow. Lets hope it is done smartly by stretching west and south (into Warfield). And mark my words, less than 3 years and the only blue light you will see in Eldersburg is the one catching you in a speed trap.

Gabrielle, thanks for the information on why so many people want to see the Kmart gone. I'm surprised to hear there's not another alternative to having something nice done with the rest of the vacant space with Kmart sticking around. There are obviously enough people who want a nicer shopping center that the mall owners should listen!!

It's a shame that these employees from Peebles and Blockbuster will lose their jobs ! However all residents and especially Ellen Dix of FACC should focus their frustrations at Harvey Dixon and Black Oak Assocs. They have stopped with the plan development of the comerical center across from Home Depot and the Old London Fog DC ( Eldersburg Way ? )and have owned Carroltowne Center on two ocassions. They have done NOTHING to improve this facility ! This is a large property, there is nothing stopping them from re-developing portions of the center that are vacant.
If I was a small business owner I would head north to the new center owned by St. John's Properties across from Athens Fitness ! Don't penalize the remaining business at Carrolltowne Center and their employees because Black Oak is a deadbeat owner.
