Girls Lacrosse: Liberty Downs Urbana in Home Opener

The lions took to the field for the first game of the season Monday.

It was cold Monday night, but the Liberty girls lacrosse squad was hot as they rocked Urbana, 18-3.

Senior Maggie McCormick led the Lions with six goals and three assists. Senior Amanda Legar and sophomores Haley Price and Megan Topper had two goals each. Legar and Price each had an assist.

"Definitely trying to get used to our new field. Ground balls are pretty slow—they don’t roll very much. Got to get down. For the most part, we did a really nice job," said Lion coach Kristen Crutchfield.

"We have two excellent goalies. Both made some great saves. They are the backbone of our defense. It’s nice to know we have both of them in goal," said Crutchfield.

Also finding the net were Georgia Karr, Alexis Cross, Rebecka Coughlin, Marissa Clements, Jenna Crutchfield and Maggie Griffin. Karr handed out three assists, Crutchfield had two, while Clements and Coughlin had one each.

The Lions out-shot the visiting Hawks 32-11.

"Our fast breaks were on. Our slow breaks we have to work on a little bit, even getting down on the ball and possessing, but other than that we moved the ball pretty well. We have to work on limiting our turnovers," said Crutchfield.

In other sports at Liberty Monday, the Lions downed Francis Scott Key 5-4 in baseball and 8-1 in softball.
