Liberty showed their three weeks of work Friday evening with an end of band camp tailgate and preview show.

The Lion band has spent the last three weeks in band camp learning their 2011 show, "Atlantis."

The band has 37 musicians and 10 in the color guard under drum major Grant Orndorff, a junior at Liberty High School.

Brandi Jason, music director at Liberty High School, says their new show features 15 Greco-Roman pillars on the field. "Seven small pillars are dispersed throughout for the guard and musicians to use, and eight 8' tall (robotic) pillars staged backfield 'collapse' when the sea swallows Atlantis," said Jason. "The color guard wear modern, shimmery toga-like costumes and the color palate is rich in blues, greens and shades of gold."

The soloists are TJ Martin on soprano saxophone and Matthew Demers on trumpet. The Lions will have extensive use of battery and front ensemble percussion in the 3rd movement.

Jason is starting her eighth year at Liberty. Last year the Lions won the Tournament of Bands Chapter 5 Championships for the fourth consecutive year. They placed 11 at the ACC’S.

The Lions take part in the Tournament of Bands and host a cavalcade show this fall and will also host the Chapter 5 championships on Oct. 22. The Chapter coordinator is Randy Smith from Sykesville, and Liberty band director, Jason is the assistant coordinator.

"We expect more than 20 bands to descend on our school and are heavily soliciting help from the school and greater Eldersburg community," said Jason. "We encourage everyone to come out and join us for an awesome evening of music and marching at it's best."
