Legislature Approves Tax Hike, Pension Shift

Governor calls budget package "good for all Marylanders." Republicans say burden to local governments may force county governments to increase taxes.

The Maryland House of Delegates gave final approval Wednesday to a package of three bills that increases taxes on some state residents, shifts part of teacher pensions to local governments and undoes the so-called "doomsday budget." The votes Wednesday afternoon capped the three-day special session called by Gov. Martin O'Malley in order to override more than $500 million in cuts made in a budget passed in early April. The Senate approved the same three bills Tuesday. As part of the package, legislators approved by a vote of 86-51 what amounts to a 50-50 split of teacher pension costs with local governments. Community Media Center Presents 2012 Vollie Awards

The Community Media Center recognized the county's volunteer video producers.

Nearly 100 people filled the Carroll County Arts Center to take part in the Community Media Center's 2012 Vollie Awards presentation. The Community Media Center is a Public, Education, and Government Media organization that provides a shared broadcast-production facility for five local television channels - Channel 18-Carroll Community College, Channel 19-the Public Access Channel, Channel 21-Board of Education Channel, Channel 23-Municipal Channel and Channel 24-the County Government Channel. The Vollie Awards recognize the efforts of Carroll County's volunteer producers as well as their counterparts at the Board of Education, Carroll County Government, local colleges and municipalities. Denise Beaver is the deputy director of economic development for Carroll County government.

Every day, Denise Beaver is working with business owners, big and small, to help them grow and succeed in Carroll County. Beaver has been the county's deputy director of economic development since 2001, and she recently earned national economic developer recertification. POLL: Should Maryland Allow Alcohol Sales in Grocery Stores?

The proposed liquor store in Wegmans has sparked the debate.

  The proposed 10,000-square-foot liquor store inside the new Columbia Wegmans has reignited the debate on whether wine, beer and liquor should be sold in Maryland grocery and convenience stores. In an expansive article on Saturday, the Baltimore Sun examined how multiple grocery stores are trying to find ways around rules that generally ban chain grocery stores from selling wine, beer and liquor. (There are some exceptions, such as an Eastern Shore Giant location that has a license that has been grandfathered.)
