BGE Works to Restore Power, Offers Winter Storm Tips

Service has been restored to 11,000 BGE customers while about that many more await restoration, according to company officials.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. crews worked throughout the night to restore service to customers affected by the season's first winter storm.

As of 10 a.m., power has been restored to about 11,000 customers, with that many remaining outages still to restore, according to a statement from the company. Barring any additional outages, all power is expected to be restored by late Monday evening, officials said.

Crews are working "safely and as quickly as possible to ensure public safety" to repair the 11,000 remaining outages, which were mainly caused by weakened trees and ice-coated tree limbs coming down on power lines and electric delivery equipment, according to BGE officials.

"More than 950 BGE employees and field personnel continue to work safely and quickly in challenging and harsh winter weather conditions to restore service to our customers who lost power as a result of Sunday’s snow and freezing rain,” said Carol Dodson, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE.

She thanked customers for their patience and reminded them that the safety of crews and customers is the first priority in such storms.

BGE customers are reminded to report power outages to BGE by calling 877-778-222, by filling out an online form from a mobile device or by visiting the company's website.

The company offers these tips to help prevent equipment malfunctions during winter storms:

  • Keep outside meters and attached equipment, including  vent pipes, free of snow and ice buildup by using a broom or brush to keep them clear.
  • Clear ice and snow away from outside pipes that provide ventilation for direct-vent furnaces and water heaters
  • Clean dryer vents to prevent lint build-up and clear exterior portions of snow and ice.
  • To ensure proper functioning, clear electric heat pumps of snow and ice.
