What Will Kate's Pregnancy Mean for Baby Names in 2013?

How will the newest royal affect parents' naming habits?

 

According to popular website BabyCenter, royal family events are an influence on baby naming trends. One article on the site estimates that in 2012 - the year Queen Elizabeth celebrated her diamond jubilee (her 60th year of her accession to the throne) - the name Elizabeth is expected to see a 264 percent increase in popularity.

But what about the younger royals?

Since the announcement of her engagement to Prince William in 2010, the use of the names Catherine (Greek origin, means “pure”) and Kate (a nickname for Catherine) are expected to rise by 188 and 264 percent respectively. Even Pippa, the name of Kate's sister, (Greek origin, means “friend of horses”) is slated to see a dramatic increase, the same article claims.

While the name William has traditionally been popular, BabyCenter believes that its use will increase 654 percent in 2012 compared to 2011.

Pundits across the spectrum are putting out theories as to what William and Kate will name their baby, which is due next year. Some speculate the couple will honor William’s mom and select “Diana,” while others believe they will reach further back in the family tree and choose George, Alexandra, Isabel or Leopold.

Popular betting website PaddyPower offers a number of odds and betting opportunities surrounding the royal birth. You can bet on the child’s sex, hair color, the time of the birth, the weight and most importantly, the name.

The site currently lists “Victoria” as the most likely, with 6/1 odds.

  • Elizabeth, 8/1
  • Phillip, Louis and Diana, 9/1
  • Mary, 12/1
  • Charles, 14/1
  • John, Arthur and David, 16/1

The least likely name choices for William and Kate according to PaddyPower?
