Arts Council News: Auditions, Classes, Shows

There is something for everyone at the Arts Council in January.

There is no post-holiday lull at the Arts Council. There are entertaining shows throughout January as well as classes and auditions for a spring show.

Auditions for Wonderland!

Auditions for Wonderland, a musical for elementary school aged actors in grades 3-5, will take place Saturday, Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster.

The musical will be directed by Julie Herber of the Maryland Ensemble Theatre’s Fun Company. Actors should be prepared to sing 16 bars of a song of their choice with no accompaniment. Actors should come wearing clothing appropriate to move onstage--no skirts, flip flops etc. Tuition is $130 for Arts Council members, $145 for non-members. Scholarship assistance is available. Snow date and possible call backs will be Sunday the 29th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Rehearsals will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:30-6:30 p.m.   Performances will be May 4, 5, and 6. Advanced registration is not required to audition, just show up! Visitwww.carrollcountyartscouncil.org for more information.

  • Tom Chapin will play at the Arts Council on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m.. Adult albums and kids’ albums, contemporary folk and pop, Tom Chapin’s music spans styles and generations. For more than thirty years and through twenty-two compact discs, Chapin has entertained, amused and enlightened audiences of all ages with life-affirming original songs told in a sophisticated array of musical styles. Presented by Common Ground on the Hill. Tickets are $19 for adults, $17 for students, seniors 65+ and teens.
  • FLICC presents Antonia on the Hill on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Winner of the Academy Award for best Foreign Film, this whimsical film tells the story of a Dutch matron who oversees a close knit, Matriarchal community where feminism and liberalism thrive. Tickets are $6 for adults,  $5 CCAC members, seniors 60+, and students under 18.
  • The Legacy School presents the Rogues on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. The Rogues return to the Carroll Arts Center for a benefit concert for The Legacy School. The Legacy School is an innovative, multi-sensory school specializing in the education of bright dyslexic children in grades 1-8. Over the past 16 years the performances of this CeltRock Folk Classical group have electrified audiences on two continents. Tickets cost $25. 
  • Carroll Community College presents Cry Freedom on Monday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. This 1987 film depicts a true story of the friendship between black activist Steven Biko (played by Denzel Washington) and liberal white newspaper editor Donald Woods (plated by Kevin Kline) as they fought apartheid in South Africa. This event is free.
  • Local bluegrass band Iron Ridge will play live in concert on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. One of the region’s premiere country music ensembles, they are dedicated to the preservation of the old-time traditional bluegrass in the style of Bill Monroe, Dr. Ralph Stanley and others.  Tickets cost $15 for adults, $13 for CCAC members, seniors 60+, and students under 18.
