Baltimore/DC: Worst Drivers in America

Find out where Baltimore and DC rank in terms of accident data.

Think drivers are bad where you live?

You may not be alone.

A new Allstate Insurance Company report names Baltimore and DC as two of the places with the worst drivers in America.

The 2012 Best Drivers Report ranks DC as the worst place in the nation for drivers and Baltimore one step behind.

The report ranks America’s largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to make a ranking on which places have the best drivers.

Tell us in comments: What are your biggest gripes about drivers in your area? How could they improve?

The report ranked cities according to average years between accidents and relative accident likelihood compared to the national average.

Sioux Falls, SD, was ranked the number one place for “best drivers,” according to the report.

DC received the lowest rank among the 200 cities studied that had available data: 195. Baltimore was ranked 194, the second lowest slot on the list.

According to the report, residents go, on average, 4.7 years between accidents in DC and 5.3 years between accidents in Baltimore.

In Sioux Falls, the average is 13.8 years between accidents, the report stated.

The report also analyzed company claim data to calculate the likelihood that drivers will get in an accident compared to the national average.

Sioux Falls drivers are 27.6 percent less likely to get in a car accident compared to the national average, the report stated. DC drivers are 112.1 percent more likely to get in an accident compared to the national average.  In Baltimore, it’s 87.9 percent more likely.

This isn’t the first time Maryland has received bad marks for driving.

A GMAC insurance report in 2011 said Maryland drivers ranked 49 out of 51 in terms of how they scored on a written test on road rules, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The companies must be knowledgeable about the future, that's where the actuaries come in. The Insurance Companies were probably the main reason there was no apocalypse because of Y2K. (Remember THAT?) Power Failures!! Bank Failures!!! No Water!!! Mobs in the Street!!! 2 years going in, the companies added clauses to Commercial policies that ANY losses because of failure to address the 2000 trouble on computers would NOT be paid. Well, programmers had a big windfall as they worked to prevent the problem. It worked and there were few problems.

Here's an observation many of you on the Patch are blind to: There is no question that many of these worst driving areas are full of ghetto brothas and illegals who by far are the worst drivers.
Steve August 30, 2012 at 04:20 PM
That's ridiculous. How can you tell if someone is "illegal" when they are driving a car.
Laura M. August 30, 2012 at 04:22 PM
racist much?
Joe August 30, 2012 at 04:26 PM
Thats not racist. Look at the list here of open warrants in Montgomery County alone where many illegal live and drive. Look at all the thousands of FTA and driving with no license or insurance. What happens when these people hit you and have no license or insurance? http://www6.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/POL/districts/ISB/majorcrimes/Warrants/warrant.htm SOMETHING must be done in MoCo to keep these people off the roads.
Lisa Ansell August 30, 2012 at 04:39 PM
They are bad drivers because 1) no one knows what 'yield' means 2) people are too busy on their cell phones to pay attention to how they are driving and 3) people who have no business driving in the fast lane are driving in the fast lane holding the whole line of traffic up which creates jams. For those that don't know, the left lane is for PASSING.
Steve August 30, 2012 at 04:51 PM
There is nothing there that says if the person with the open warrant is "illegal" or not.
Laura M. August 30, 2012 at 04:55 PM
Joe, assuming poor drivers are illegals and Black folks is quite racist.
Joe August 30, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Noting there to the blind racists like Steve who lives in a glass house. We all are well aware that MoCo is an illegal alien paradise where some even vote in local elections. We all are well aware MoCo is a sanctuary county like Baltimore city. When you see that list of thousands and thousands of names one can safely assume given the facts that many many are illegal aliens. If you can't see that....... Laura, it is not racist given the facts and long time driving experience.
Ashley August 30, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Perhaps we should take some lessons from the Europeans. I think a lot of the problem is that people don't view driving as a responsibility, it's just a privilege to them. Personally, I'd like to see it be harder to get a drivers license as I am tired of people hitting me. I've been involved in two accidents in the last year and neither of them were my fault. People running stop signs and people rear ending me while I'm stopped at a stop sign... it's made me even more paranoid of what people are going to do while driving.
Joe August 30, 2012 at 05:13 PM
The aassumption many are illegal is backed up by the FTA's. If you are here legally and abiding by the law generally, you would appear. If you are here illegally you see no point since MoCo will do nothing about it and let this list grow and grow and grow to the size you see. If they were legal there would not be so many driving without licenses and no insurance.
Steve August 30, 2012 at 05:16 PM
1. There is not one instance of any "illegal" voting in a Montgomery County elect. 2. MoCo isn't a sanctuary city 3. You can't tell if someone is illegal or not by their last name or the way they drive
Kareem N Mikoffee August 30, 2012 at 05:34 PM
Joe I knew I'd stir the liberal ostriches up. I defy any clear sighted liberal to drive I-95 from Cecil county to The Virginia border and count how many ghetto brothas and Latinos fly by you at high speed weaving in and out of traffic. You will see an occasional young white boy but the numbers are way out of proportion to the minority population. Those mean racist Maryland State troopers stop them a lot also because they are black forget the fact that most troopers can't tell the race until after they stop the car. Also how many innocent Americans are killed in accidents by illegals? Joe you give them evidence and they just cry racist.
Laura M. August 30, 2012 at 05:36 PM
yeah. not a liberal, just a reasonable individual. i drive 95 every day and do you know who i tend to see pulled over the most? white males.
Joe August 30, 2012 at 05:40 PM
Steve, are you sure you want to go there? One day son you will be better informed. "Takoma Park stands by non-U.S. citizen voting law. A state delegate last week challenged Takoma Park’s non-U.S. citizen voting law, 20 years after the city enacted the policy that allows all noncitizens who live in Takoma Park to vote in city elections." http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/takoma-park-stands-by-non-us-citizen-voting-law/2012/03/13/gIQAVBcgBS_story.html

Montgomery County is a top place for illegal immigrants to live July 01, 2011 http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2011-07-01/news/bs-ed-0630-illegals-maryland-best-let20110630_1_illegal-aliens-legal-status-sanctuary-state "An Illegal Alien's Guide to the Top Five Best Places to Live In America" By Bob Dane Published June 30, 2011 "2. Montgomery Country, Maryland If jobs are what attract you, then this upscale community close to our nation's capital offers the mother of all magnets. The first step to getting a job is to visit a Casa De Maryland (CASA) Welcome Center. Their employment specialists help you find a job and don’t give a hoot about your legal status. They will even help you acquire an IRS-issued taxpayer identification number because, of course, you’re here illegally and not eligible for a real Social Security number. This powerful organization is truly the illegal alien Welcome Wagon with $16 million in assets, $4.9M of it acquired in 2010 from government contracts! Don’t worry about Secure Communities because the County recently opposed its implementation. And for college-bound illegal aliens, take advantage of in-state-tuition now that the state passed the Maryland Dream Act." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/10/AR2009011002149_pf.html

"Attitudes Shift on Illegal Residents January 11, 2009 " "For years, mainstream Montgomery County has been generally accepting of illegal immigrants, and county leaders followed suit, pledging not to enforce immigration laws even as police agencies elsewhere in the region began to do so. " Educate yourself Steve and never debate a topic you have no education in.
Kareem N Mikoffee August 30, 2012 at 05:45 PM
Yeah the MSP has to throw the black and brown fish back in the pond or else they'll be sued. The most aggressive reckless drivers are the ghetto brothas and illegals and Obama constituents which would probably include you Laura.
Laura M. August 30, 2012 at 05:47 PM
nope, don't want that guy in office, thanks. didn't want him in the first time around, don't want him in after this year. but hey, keep on making assumptions. :) i'm about as far from a liberal as one can get, but i'm not a brainless Republican, either.
Tim August 30, 2012 at 06:15 PM
Sorry, but I don't agree. I work in a 'not so nice' area in southern Baltimore, and I live in Perry Hall. The drivers around Perry Hall are worse. It's not close.
Tim August 30, 2012 at 06:17 PM
Ashley: "I think a lot of the problem is that people don't view driving as a responsibility, it's just a privilege to them." Completely agree!
Steve August 30, 2012 at 06:20 PM
Big deal. It's only a local i.e. Takoma Park election. It doesn't affect me.
Joe August 30, 2012 at 06:29 PM
Steve, you have been again shown to be uninformed. You were wrong and can't seem to be a man and face it.
Calique August 30, 2012 at 08:29 PM
Not only does it hold up traffic in the passing lane, but it forces drivers to pass on the RIGHT, which is a hazard. Not to mention folks in the middle lane on the highway who pass on the right for NO REASON other than they are completely ignorant of the fact that one is supposed to pass on the LEFT for safety.
John Cole August 31, 2012 at 11:47 AM
Gomer: Don't you realize that using your turn signal creates an invisible force field around your vehicle, thereby allowing you to change lanes withot checking . .
Buck Harmon September 02, 2012 at 11:44 AM
WOW ! This was a refreshing thread to read...learned a lot about driving and there was no name calling....how cool is that...??!!
Mike M September 02, 2012 at 07:32 PM
I chuckle at the people that get all upset about people signalling and moving into "their" lane. If there's a decent gap, then I signal to let you know I'm going, and then I'm going. If you're paying attention and keeping a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, it should be a non-issue anyways. If I see somebody trying to get in, I back off the accelerator and let them in. No. Big. Deal.
Mike R September 04, 2012 at 12:10 AM
It all comes down to patience. 95% of the drivers on the roads cooperate with each other. Its the other 5% that ruin it for everyone else. Big rig and motorcycle drivers are well aware of this.
Other Tim September 04, 2012 at 12:46 AM
You obviously are not the problem. It's the ones who put their signal on AS they are changing lanes (not before) to squeeze between two cars. Maybe the two cars that driver is squeezing between are too close together, but that does not seem to bother the idiots who do it. Too many people today seem to feel everyone must get out of their way. Also, too many people don't seem to understand the concept of yielding coming on to a highway. If a driver coming onto a highway forces a car already on the highway to have to hit the brakes, he or she has created a hazard. Sometimes in life, you just have to wait your turn!
Andrea D September 18, 2012 at 02:18 PM
@fred - Even if they are going the speed limit, if the person in the left lane is able to get over into the right lane, they should, when someone behind them approaches at a faster rate of speed. It is not up to you to police the other car's speed. That action usually brings upon road rage from the driver behind you or their zipping fastly into the right hand lane and back into the left lane in front of you, sometimes at a close distance. Too me, it is not worth the risk. I just get over in the right lane and let them continue on their merry way and sometimes hope there is a cop ahead who pulls them over for their speeding :-)
