Carroll County's Inaugural Restaurant Week: Fresh and Local Ingredients at E.W. Beck's

Sampling the fare at local restaurants during Carroll County's inaugural restaurant week.

Carroll County's inaugural Restaurant Week kicked off Sunday, and I'm taking on the task of trying out the specials and profiling the local participating restaurants.

So we start the week today at in Sykesville. I say we, as I enjoyed the lunch with my fiancée, Shirley Snyder.

July marked Beck’s 19th year in business, and the restaurant jumped at the idea of participating in the county's first restaurant week, according to general manager Dan Feehan.

"I had been a customer to others down in Baltimore City who have been doing it for years," said Feehan. "When they offered us the information about it, we jumped on board right away. It’s a great advertising technique and it’s great to promote local business as well.’’

For restaurant week, Beck’s is offering a cup of soup and an 8 ounce Beck burger for lunch with a choice of three toppings for $10.11, or a cup of Maryland crab soup and a single crab cake for $15.11.

"What we are locally famous for is our classic crab cakes and probably our cream of crab soup, crab dip and wings. Those are our top four that everybody seems to come back for," said Feehan.

The restaurant also features local fruits and vegetables from Buppert's Farm.

Serving me the soup of the day, Italian tomato parmesan, and a Beck burger was waiter Zach Maskavich.

The other soups offered were cream of crab, Maryland crab soup and chili.

Dinner at Beck's for restaurant week is a three-course meal starting with a cup of cream of crab soup with the second course a single crab cake, loaded mashed potatoes, vegetable of the day and a small house salad. The third course is a cupcake and a cup of coffee, all for $20.11.

Beck’s is located in one of the older buildings on . It has the feel of a local tavern where everyone may know your name. In the main area there are nine televisions, and Sunday eight of them were on sports.

Beck’s is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. The restaurant also can host or cater events.

Starting on Aug. 27 they will host live music on every other Saturday. First up is band Well Strung followed by Vox on Sept. 10. There is a patio party slated for Aug. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m.
