National Chicken Wing Day 2013: Hot Mess or Time to Celebrate?

Patch wants to know where the best chicken wings are in Carroll County.

by Susan Jenkins

If you love biting into a juicy piece of chicken with light crispy skin coated with a spicy sauce, get ready to celebrate on July 29: It's National Chicken Wing Day.

In case you missed it, the guy who eats all the hot dogs recently won a contest for eating the most chicken wings at Hooters in Florida. Click the link to watch a video of Joey Chesnut devouring 179 wings in 10 minutes.

While the significance of Monday's date may not be noted on your calendar, the special day has been around for decades.

According to the National Chicken Wing Day Facebook page: "In 1977, the chicken wing had gained national fame and then Buffalo, NY Mayor Stan Makowski proclaimed July 29 as National Chicken Wing Day. Thousands of pounds of chicken wings are consumed each week in Buffalo and around the world."

Whether you like hot Buffalo or mild chicken wings, there is a wing variety to please everyone—even those who prefer their chicken boneless. While many drench wings in butter with hot sauce and serve them with blue cheese dressing and celery, there are many other ways to prepare them. Sometimes they're sweet (think honey barbecue sauce) and can be baked or grilled instead of deep fried.

If you have a T-shirt from The Greene Turtle, visit any location on Monday wearing it to receive a free order of chicken wings! If you don't have a shirt, you can buy one on Monday and still receive the deal.

Do you have a favorite location to get chicken wings? Know of any other businesses offering deals? Tell us in the comments.
