In order to obtain the accreditation, Sykesville had to meet several criteria, including:

  • Have broad-based community support for the commercial district revitalization process, with strong support from both the public and private sectors
  • Possess and exhibit an historic preservation ethic
  • Have an adequate operating budget
  • Have a paid professional program manager
  • Conduct a program of ongoing training for staff and volunteers

“We congratulate this year’s nationally accredited Main Street programs for meeting our established performance standards,” Valecia Crisafulli, acting director of the National Main Street Center, said in a statement.

“Accredited Main Street programs are meeting the challenges of the downtown in the economy head on and are successfully using a focused, comprehensive revitalization strategy to keep their communities vibrant and sustainable.”
