3.27.11: The Signs May Be Mysterious, But the Message is Clear

A local church is "launching" its services at a new location - Liberty High School.

The signs are everywhere.

The black signs with the white writing, “3.27.11” popped up on street corners in Eldersburg and Sykesville this month with only one clue printed smaller than the numbers on the bottom edge: “Launch at Liberty.”

“The idea was to get people’s attention and to let the community know about our launch,” said Amanda Anderson, connections catalyst with Freedom Church, the organization behind the “launch” at Liberty High School.

“The signs were our way of saying we want to reach the community and get people involved. We wanted to say to everyone that we’re here and we’re here to help you,” said Daniel Rogers, an intern worship leader with Freedom Church.

The “launch” is a way to get people to visit Freedom Church at its new location in the Liberty High School auditorium. Their first official worship and open house to the community is on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The church has already held three worship services there, but this is the first time the congregation of 130 to 140 people will be opening its doors to the public in the new home.

The church's previous location was in the back of the Carrolltowne Mall, tucked behind the building near the former movie theater.

“It was a nice homey feel back there, but we were unable to really reach out to the community,” said Rogers. “This will give us our chance to really help people and let them know we’re there.”

The Haitian people honored the church’s pastor, Tim Houston, this week on Nassau Island for his work and for the work of Freedom Church. He has spent the last 10 years helping Haiti through the Every Child Counts program. He returns Saturday night, just in time for the church’s launch at Liberty.

For Anderson and Rogers the launch and the move is about finding a voice in the community.

“We have come out of the back of the mall to help the community. It’s a way to connect people and lead them towards the betterment of the community in general,” said Rogers.

“This is great. We have been wanting to become the forefront of the community for a while now because we’ve been at the back for so long,” said Anderson.
