“The death of Osama bin Laden is an important milestone in a war that has been being waged against the United States for almost a decade. This dramatic turn of events demonstrates the resolve, ability and courage of our armed forces.

“It shows that in the end, justice will be done and that the great majority of the world that values freedom will never succumb to the terrorist acts of a small group of radicals bent on destruction of our way of life and undermining American values. While we rejoice in this news, we must be mindful of potential retaliation and stay vigilant in all parts of the world. We continue to pray for the safety of our heroic men and women that remain in harm's way and remember those who died or lost loved ones on September 11. God bless America!”

Carroll County Commissioner District 2, Haven Shoemaker

“My heartiest congratulations to the men and women of our military in accomplishing this mission. I hope the death of this horrible man provides some measure of closure to the families of the victims of 9/11. I also have to believe that, while we must remain vigilant against terrorism, the world is a safer place today.”

U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)

“While bin Laden is dead, the hateful ideology he espouses will persist. Al-Qaida is a resilient operation. We must remain vigilant and prepared. Terrorists will continue to harbor predatory intent toward the United States. But … justice has been done.”

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD)

“This is great news for the security of America, as well as for our troops at home and overseas who continue to protect us from terrorism every day. I want to thank and congratulate all of our men and women in the Armed Forces—their hard work and bravery made this possible.”

U.S. Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD)

"President Obama made bin Laden's death or capture a top priority, and it was that focus that helped bring about our biggest victory against al-Qaida. … While the enormity of this moment cannot be overstated, we all recognize that the threat of terrorism still exists and we must remain vigilant.”

Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger (D-MD)

“Bin Laden was a threat to the United States and a threat to the world. … Justice has now been done. … The military and intelligence professionals who risk their lives every day to track terrorists like bin Laden deserve our praise.”

Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-MD)

“This closes a sad and tragic chapter in our country and our world’s history. Commend the men and women of our Armed Forces and the dedicated public servants of our nation’s security agencies. This should be a day of reflection and prayer for a more peaceful future.”

 U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD)

“The death of Osama bin Laden is an important milestone in the fight against terrorism and a relief to millions of Americans and others around the world who have felt his murderous destruction. … We must remain vigilant in the continued fight against al-Qaida and any terrorists who seek to harm our nation.”
