Another Day, Another Severe Thunderstorm Watch

Strong winds, large hail may be on the way.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Carroll County, in effect until 8 p.m.

What's the difference between a thunderstorm and a severe thunderstorm? The latter brings with it not just thunder, lightning and rain, but a tornado, winds of at least 58 mph and or hail at least 3/4 of an inch in diameter.

NWS issues a severe thunderstorm watch when "conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area." So it hasn't developed yet, but NWS is reporting storms in central North Carolina seem to be moving in our direction.
