“Art Carts” Contest to Give Recycling a Face Lift

The Carroll County Department of Public Works is asking artists to decorate recycling bins to be donated to local schools.

From recycling bin to art, the Carroll County Department of Public Works is asking to local artists to turn an average recycling bin into a masterpiece.

“I wanted to do something fun to keep folks aware of our recycling programs in Carroll County,” said Maria Myers, Carroll County’s Recycling Manager.

“November 15 is ‘America Recycles Day,’ the one day that is nationally recognized as a day dedicated to the promotion of recycling. The decorated bins will be donated to schools and can be used as a teaching tool about recycling.”

The recycling contest called “Art Carts” requires that artists decorate a 65 gallon recycling bin, asking them to be mindful that the carts must still function as a recycling bin and be appropriate for community viewing.

Corey Heck, a Mount Airy resident and junior at Savannah College of Art and Design took on the challenge, creating his recycling bin featuring a recent “hot topic” in Maryland.

“For my bin I decided to focus on Maryland football's new uniforms called Maryland Pride uniforms, that were discussed all over the sports world mainly because people thought they were ugly,” said Heck. “Me and a number of other Marylanders loved them and I wanted others to see how the uniforms represent our state flag and Maryland Pride.”

Artists have until October 28 to deliver their carts to the Carroll County Government Office Building. After that, the public will be able to vote on their favorite bin until “America Recycles Day” on November 15.
