There's a way to track traffic fatalities in your area. It can be sobering.

Journalists have a grim duty each holiday season -- reporting the number of traffic fatalities associated with an intense travel period.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are more than 1,700 fatalities and 840,000 injuries yearly due to vehicle crashes off public highways.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, the NHTSA is concentrating on seatbelt enforcement, continuing its campaign urging: "Buckle Up America. Every Trip. Every Time."

According to the National Safety Council, seat belts are the single most effective protection in a vehicle crash, cutting the risk of injuries in half.
