Buy Local Week Encourages Carroll County Residents to Eat Healthy, Spend Locally

Eat Local Week is Aug. 6 through Aug. 13.

Following on the heels of last week's successful 4-H Fair, Carroll County is encouraging people to continue supporting the local economy this week with its annual Buy Local Week initiative.

The "Buy Local Challenge" is a pledge to eat a minimum of one item from a local farm, winery or participating restaurant every day during Carroll County’s designated Buy Local Week, Aug. 6 through 13.

A flyer about the initiative encourages participation with, "This is your opportunity to discover the numerous farms, farmers’ markets, wineries, bakeries and restaurants offering fresh, great tasting and most importantly, local edible products available in Carroll County."

Carroll County Agriculture Development Specialist Gabriel Zepp said that this program helps build the relationship between the farm and non-farm communities of Carroll County.

"Along with providing superior nutritional benefits for a healthier living by consuming locally grown, raised or produced products the program also supports the local economy and environment," Zepp said.

"Food and beverage that is offered and consumed where it's grown or
produced helps reduce the carbon foot print through less transportation and helps keep the retail dollar within the community," Zepp said.
