Car Show Raises Money for Children of Fallen Police

The parking lot at Carrolltown Center was packed Saturday as many came to show their support for children of fallen police officers.

When Eldersburg resident and Annapolis police officer Shane Evans was killed in a 2003 motorcycle accident on his way to work, his father Mike knew he wanted to honor his son and help others going through similar tragedies.

The Road Runners Auto Club of Maryland held its eighth annual Shane Evans Fallen Officers Fund and Benefit Car Show Saturday in the Carrolltown Center parking lot in Eldersburg.

Proceeds from the car show, now in its eighth year, are used to fund scholarships for children of fallen police officers.

"We give as much as we can," said Mike Evans. "It's not always a lot, but any money towards education helps."

Saturday's event was open to all cars for an entry fee of $15 ahead and $20 at the door. Classes for the show included tuners, motorcycles, vintage cars and active police cars.

Those in attendance could enter to win a 50/50 raffle, bid at the silent auction, watch a display from the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department, browse vendors and snack on food.

Corporal Patrick Zito, of the Baltimore County police, has been involved in the show since its third year. Zito assists the scholarship fund in selecting its winners. "We have always had more applicants than money available," said Zito.

This year's $750 scholarship winners are:

- David Patrick Stanko of Manchester, studying math at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

- Joshua James Stanko of Manchester, studying pre-law at the University of Maryland, College Park.

- Emily Kathleen McGraw of Fallston, studying elementary education at York College of Pennsylvania.

- Brooke Nicole Shifflet of Nottingham, studying elementary education at Stevenson University.
