Carnival Coming to Town, Residents Watch it Come to Life Behind Carrolltown Mall

A carnival will be opening its gates on Friday behind Carrolltown Mall in Eldersburg.

The construction started this week behind as residents saw something out of place being put together in the lot behind the shopping center.

"I live behind Carrolltown Mall and today they started bringing in all the makings of having a carnival there," said Lori Butler in an e-mail to Patch. "Have you heard anything about it?"

A carnival sponsored by Jolly Shows, a family-owned business based out of Annapolis, will be opening its gates at 6 p.m. Friday for the first time in Eldersburg, according to Brenda Davis, an administrative assistant with the carnival.

Jolly Shows has been in the Maryland, D.C. and northern Virginia area for more than 70 years. According to their website, equipment is not only inspected by Jolly Shows staff, but from a series of state, county and local inspectors with each ride and piece of equipment is reviewed over 50 times per season.

A portion of the proceeds for the event will go toward the Baltimore United Volunteers, a "War of 1812-1814 re-enactment unit." They are one of 10 companies that made up the 5th Regiment Maryland Volunteer Infantry, according to their website.

The carnival will run April 8 through 17, opening at 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, Saturdays at 1 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Unlimited ride wrist bands will be on sale every weeknight from 6 p.m. to closing for $22 per person, every Saturday  from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and every Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for $17.
