Carroll County Sheriff's Office Charges Registered Sex Offender

Gary Wayne Smith failed to re-register on the sex offenders list about a month ago.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office has charged Gary Wayne Smith, 33, for failing to re-register as a sex offender, according to a press release. 

On March 18, the sheriff's office received an anonymous tip that Smith, of the 6100 block of Middleburg Road in Keymar, was living in Red Boiling Springs in Tennessee. 

Smith was convicted on Oct. 19, 2000 of third-degree sex offense, which includes sexual contact without the consent of the victim, and "an aggravating factor" causing or putting in fear of serious physical injury or disfigurement, suffocating or kidnapping, according to the Maryland State Sex Offender Registry

Smith currently has five open warrants, including pre-trial violations, a bench warrant for failure to appear and failure to re-register with the Maryland Sex Offender Registry

The Carroll County Sheriff's Ofice contacted the Lafayette Police Department in Tennessee and Smith was arrested without incident, according to the release.

Smith was charged by the Lafayette Police Department for failure to register with the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry. 

He is currently being held at the Macon County jail awaiting disposition on the Tennessee criminal charges. 

Smith will be extradited to Carroll County, MD, following that proceeding, according to the release.
