Comment: 'This is not Mexico.'

Carroll County readers react to the news of the week.

Carroll County readers took their thoughts to the Patch comments section this week, reacting most to stories about their commute, the decision to remove a billboard with Spanish and the lack of hotels in Eldersburg.

How Long is Your Commute, Eldersburg? "It's all 32! If this was two lanes down to Clarksville commute would be less than 30 minutes on average." - Tom

Spanish Billboards in Carroll County? ‘Inappropriate,’ Says Rothschild  "It's very simple. This is not Mexico, Spain, or whatever. If you think it should've stayed, then who's to say there shouldn't be a French billboard, or any other language. We speak engilsh [sic] here. This is not racist or meanspirited, it's common sense. Legal immigrants need to assimilate into American society easily, learning the language is part of that. If I moved to another country, I would not expect them to cater to me. It would be my responsibility to learn what I would need to know to live there." - JC

Exploring Issues in Eldersburg: Does the Area Need a Hotel? "I agree with the comments that a hotel is needed. I've had similar issues with friends, family, and out of town associates having to essentially go back out of town for accommodations. One business associate of mine has even expressed a desire to open a hotel and conference center right here in Sykesville/Eldersburg... And, of course, I support that vision coming to a reality. I believe that there's enough families, businesses, and community groups that could, and would, benefit that this should be on our collective 'To Do List' " - Darrin

"We do need a hotel. For several years the Liberty Basketball Club was trying to plan an invitational tournament, but there were no choices for hotel accommodations nearby, only Owings Mills and Westminster. The baseball clubs have the same problem. When the firehouse venue opens customers will be looking for lodging for wedding guests. Many good reasons for a small, nice hotel." - Kathy
