Contest Encourages Carroll County Teens to Read, Write and Make Movies this Summer

Teens can write short stories and make movies to win gift cards.

This summer, the Carroll County Public Library encourages teens not only to read during vacation, but to write and make movies as well.

Teens, entering grades 6 through 12, can participate in two contests at the library: Summer Shorts and It’s News to Me, according to thelibrary website

To participate in Summer Shorts, teens can write a short story or make a video short on the topic of their choice. Teens can enter each category if they wish, or team up with other teens to make a video. Entry deadline is July 30.

The It’s News to Me writing contest is co-sponsored by the Carroll County Times andCarroll County Public Library as part of the newspaper’s 100th anniversary. Participants are asked to write an essay on how they use news stories or how they were affected by a news story. The entry deadline is August 13.  

An awards ceremony to recognize the Summer Shorts winners will be held Monday, August 22 at 7 p.m. at the Carroll Community College Theater, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster.

It’s News to Me winners will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. at the Westminster Branch Library. 

Entry forms and complete rules are available online at teens.carr.org and in our branches. Teens may also hand in entries at any of our six branches.
