Eldersburg Ranked No. 2 For Least 'Walk-Able' Town

According to Walk Score, Eldersburg residents can't walk to certain amenities.

That’s the conclusion reached by Walk Score, a website that ranks cities and towns based on their “walkability.” Walk Score put Eldersburg as tied for being the second-least walk-able among the 78 largest communities in Maryland.

With a score of 22, Eldersburg is described by the website as “car-dependent” with only a few amenities within walking distance.

On the other side of the chart Westminster was ranked as the 24th most walk-able community in Maryland.

Overall, the most walk-able city in Maryland is Takoma Park and the town ranked No. 1 for least walkability is Lake Shore in Anne Arundel County.

Walk Score measures how easy it is to live a “car-lite” lifestyle using an algorithm to award points based on the distance to amenities in each category, according to their website.

The scoring system gives amenities within .25 miles maximum points and amenities further than one mile no points.

The website uses Google, Education.com, Open Street Map and Localeze as data sources for its calculations, in addition to taking the suggestions of residents who live in the ranked areas.

Rankings are based on the following grading scale, according to the Walk Score website:

  • 90-100: Walker’s Paradise – Daily errands do not require a car.
  • 70-89: Very Walkable – Most errands can be accomplished on foot.
  • 50-69: Somewhat Walkable – Some amenities within walking distance.
  • 25-49: Car-Dependent – A few amenities within walking distance.
  • 0-24: Car-Dependent – A few amenities within walking distance.
