Exploring Issues in Eldersburg: Should the Unincorporated Area Have Its Own ZIP Code?

Last week in our "Exploring Issues" feature we looked at the with people pitching in their comments and ideas in the comments section and on Facebook.

The topic also received 115 votes in our poll on the issue, with 71 percent saying that Eldersburg needs a Main Street and 3 percent saying that it's not necessary.

This week we're looking at area ZIP codes. In Eldersburg the ZIP code is shared with Sykesville, making 21784 a common thread between the two areas.

This isn't a new discussion. The Freedom Area Citizens Council looked into it earlier this year, requesting that the US Postal Service look into using 21785 as the ZIP code for Eldersburg.

The response was that the USPS sees Eldersburg as a separate area already and currently does not have the funds to make the very expensive switch to a new ZIP code.
