Hurricane Irene Hits South Carroll, Leaves Main Street Dark, Debris on Roads

The historic East Coast storm passed through Maryland overnight.

Leaves and debris cover the roads and trees hit power lines in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene in Eldersburg. 

There are no serious injuries reported from the storm, but 40 roads are closed in Carroll County Sunday morning as crews asses the damage throughout the area.

"In many cases, we are waiting for BGE to respond to clear downed wires before the trees can be cleared," said Wesminster Police Chief Jeff Spaulding. 

There are currently 15,320 BGE customers without power in Carroll County and more than 463,000 in the state of Maryland.

Main Street Sykesville is without power as of 4:45 p.m. Sunday.

BGE is working to restore power to Main Street by Sunday evening, according to the Town of Sykesville. 

 still held their 11 a.m. service although Main Street itself was void of people Sunday afternoon. 

Sykesville Convenience Store and the High's Dairy Store on Sandosky Road are closed today due to the power outage. 

The traffic lights are out on Route. 32 to Route 70 and causing backups as police and utilities workers assess damage. 

The emergency shelter at Winters Mill High School closed at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Carroll County Emergency Coordinator.
