Main Street, Schools Out of the Dark, Thousands Still Without Power in Carroll County

Century High School and Hampstead Elementary both are up and running.

Two schools closed on the first day back for students will open Wednesday while close to 7,000 BGE customers in Carroll County remain without power as of midnight Wednesday as the area recovers from Hurricane Irene. 

and Hampstead Elementary School are up and running but several Eldersburg and Sykesville residents remain in the dark. 

"Power still out here. Hopefully it gets restored soon because it's getting really frustrating, especially with having two small children," said Melissa Johnson Durst who lives off of Locust Lane in Eldersburg and was still out of power Tuesday night.

London Bridge Road and Streaker Road were also among those effected by power outages. 

Main Street Sykesville was in the dark Saturday night through Tuesday afternoon but that didn't stop local businesses from opening Tuesday morning. The phone lines in the area were also down causing many local businesses to turn to Internet and Facebook.

"E-mail or Facebook me with any books you need. I can get them to you," said Debbie Scheller, owner of a Likely Story Bookstore on Main Street Sykesville via Facebook. 

"We are still out of power at the salon, but that won't stop us," said Samsara Salon and Spa via Facebook. "Hair services will include a refreshingly cold shampoo with the best scalp massage ever." 

Some Main Street businesses used Facebook and Twitter to announce to locals that they were back in business after the power came back. 

"It has been a long few days for me and many of my fellow Sykesville residents and business owners. I could not have made it through without help from my dedicated staff and friends, especially Bruce at Salernos for lending me some much needed refrigerator space," said Scott Beck, owner of E.W. Beck's. "Come on down, we miss you all." 

"Sykesville has been lit up again. We thank you BGE for your efforts and dedication in getting us up and running as fast as possible," said Baldwin's Station via Twitter. 

The Westminster YMCA has opened their doors to all local residents still without power. Cooper Park in Sykesville also has public restrooms for those on well water and still without power.
