Kelli Nelson, a member of our Mom Council weighed in:

As with so many things, I think it depends on the individual child.  However, research shows that 90 percent of brain development occurs in the first 3 years of life, so it stands to reason that introduction of critical life-long skills, such as reading and language development, should occur during those formative years.

Reading or an "introduction" to reading also stimulates creative thinking. No one is expecting a 2 or 3 year old to read "War and Peace", but to expose children to different "sounds" and reoccurring vocabulary will facilitate good reading habits.
