POLL: Should September 11 be a National Holiday?

Tuesday will mark 11 years since the United States was attacked by terrorists.

The president has called for a national day of service to remember the attacks of September 11, 2001, on Tuesday. Do you think the day should be honored in other ways?

We want to know if you think 9/11 should be a national holiday. Take our poll below and tell us in the comments how the nation should remember the thousands of lives lost in the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, the Pentagon and on United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Shanksville, PA.

Ceremonies across the country have been downplayed today, reports the New York Times.

"After the commemorations reached a peak of sorts for last year’s 10th anniversary, a sprinkling of communities have decided to scale back — prompted, they say, by a growing feeling that it may be time to move on," the paper reported.

I believe that if Dec 7 isn't a national holiday, 9/11 shouldn't be either. Services remembering what happened are sufficient so that the American people won't forget.

You don't make a holiday out of a disaster! We are STILL trying to undo the damage that came in the aftermath of that attack, and STILL trying to get out from under the thumb of Homeland Security, the Patriot Act (which was anything but...) and the loss of our freedoms that resulted in strip searching children. 911 was a disaster, as much for what happened, as the knee jerk reaction that came after.

I don't think 9/11 should be a holiday off. It should be a day of service otherwise it will become just another sale shopping day like Memorial Day and Veteran's Day. Most folks are more concerned about buying cheap plastic stuff or clothes from China at Walmart than they are in truly honoring 9/11 victims and families. A day of service is much more honorable than a shopping day off.

I don't think "holiday" was the best term to describe what should be on this day. We should all take the day of 9/11 off so we can mourn, but also celebrate what we have now. We have a country that united under the most tragic of circumstances. We should have a day where all differences are forgotten, a day to celebrate what we have as a country. To be proud of who we are, our strength, and our freedom.

I agree with the above--it is one thing to have a day of remembrance and service to our country--I am in favor of that. But making it a "holiday" (1) gives too much attention to those who did this, and (2) as David says, gives stores an excuse to market it. It would be great if employers (voluntarily) gave their workers the day off to do community service projects, but the kids should stay in school and learn about the event and what it meant.
