Speak Out: Have Senior Pranks Gone Too Far?

The list of senior pranks rippling across the region and the country as graduation approaches is as long as it is varied.

•        In Howard County, a involved at least 30 seniors spray painting inappropriate messages and pictures around the high school, flipping over the 'prom promise car,' toilet papering trees and moving trash cans into the street, school officials said. No one was charged, police said.

•     Graduating seniors at a high school in Alabama this month took the senior prank to a “whole new level,” reported 48 News, which said sand was poured in school hallways, books were thrown around and mice were hidden in drawers. Officials said someone also rigged a bucket with a chicken inside above a door of the school, reported 48 News. Public safety officials said no one would be charged in the incidents.

•        At another Alabama school, police caught a student this month spreading dead fish across school grounds.

•     The principal at in Ellicott City recently apologized to anyone who was squirted with a water gun or had to deal with a traffic jam in the lot in one of the milder senior pranks reported.  And the best part? Students even cleaned up their mess.

But students walk a fine line with pranks. Last year, an 18-year-old senior at a high school in Indiana was arrested after his attempts to smuggle a blow up doll into the girls’ restroom resulted in the Indiana Bomb Squad being called.

"In this post-Columbine world, that's what you get when these kinds of things happen," the county prosecutor, Phil Caviness, told WGRZ.com, referring to the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado in 1999.
