American Cancer Society is seeking Carroll County participants for Cancer Prevention Study-3

Participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 in Carroll County and help in the fight against cancer.

I've spent 20 years of my medical career taking care of cancer patients and will probably spend my entire life on this mission, but what I'd really like to do is put cancer in the ground.

The Carroll County community has a unique opportunity to help do just that.Carroll Hospital Center was very pleased to start the New Year by co-hosting the Carroll County kickoff of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Prevention Study (CPS-3). This national study will ultimately save lives from cancer by collecting information that will provide the Society's researchers with a better understanding of the genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that contribute to cancer.

I applaud the American Cancer Society for this huge undertaking. Nationally, the goal is 300,000 volunteer enrollees. In Carroll County, our goal is to enroll 425 participants. Carroll Hospital Center is one of four Carroll County partner enrollment sites from March 12-16.

We need a very diverse, large population for this study in order to draw conclusions about cancer in minority and all populations. We still do not know why Maryland has the second highest cancer rate in the nation, and CPS-3 may help answer that puzzle. Geographic diversity and representation in this study is also important. The study is open to U.S. residents, ages 30 to 65, who have not been diagnosed with cancer (except basal and squamous cell skin cancer), and who are willing to make a long-term commitment.

So, I'm calling on the Carroll County community to support Cancer Prevention Study-3 by enrolling if you're eligible or by spreading the word to your family, neighbors and friends.

CPS-3 will lead us along the path to create a cancer-free world. It's of the utmost importance to put our efforts into preventing cancer.

To make an appointment to enroll in the study this March, go to www.CPS3CarrollCounty.org. In addition to Carroll Hospital Center, enrollment will take place at Four Seasons Sports Complex in Hampstead, M & T Bank in Mount Airy and Merritt Athletic Club in Eldersburg.
