Obituary: Devin Michael Spence

A public memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 at Manchester Valley High School at 1 p.m.

Devin Michael Spence, 23, of Westminster died tragically Monday, Feb. 11, 2013 as the result of an automobile accident.

Born June 25, 1989 in Towson, MD, he was the son of Michael and Marjorie Sunderlin Spence.

He was a 2007 graduate of Winters Mill High School where he was an active member and group leader his senior year of the Best Buddies program. His senior year he also accompanied the Winters Mill lacrosse team to their first state championship where they won first place.

He graduated with a teaching degree from Towson University and was a math teacher at Manchester Valley High School where he was very committed to his students and was recently involved in the schools ski club and was the assistant coach of the Varsity girl’s lacrosse team.

Manchester Valley High School Principal Randy Clark told Patch Monday afternoon that the school community was in a state of shock over the loss.

"Mr. Spence was a very dynamic young teacher that brought an enthusiastic energy to our faculty and to our school," Clark said in an email.  "Our entire school community is in a state of shock.  We send our heartfelt condolences to Devin’s family."

In 2009, Spence also launched a business, D.S. Solutions, that provided math tutoring services to students. On the company website, Spence writes, "D.S. Solutions grew out of a passion to reach and teach successful students who had forgotten just how successful they truly were."

Spence enjoyed poker, lacrosse, basketball, fantasy football, the outdoors, weight lifting with his brother Travis and playing his home made cornhole set at family cookouts. He traveled to the Dominican Republic with Young Life to help provide clean drinking water to the village. He was also a very strong supporter of the Special Olympics and anything involving special education in honor of his brother Chase.

He is survived by parents Michael and Marjorie Spence, Brothers Travis and Chase Spence, and Sister Aubrey Spence all of Westminster, and numerous aunts and uncles.

A public Memorial service will be held at Manchester Valley High School auditorium on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dave Schafer officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the school.
