Letter to the Editor on Legislative Redistricting: 'The requests of the citizens were ignored.'

The following letter from FACC president Ellen Dix looks at the proposed legislative redistricting map and its impact on Eldersburg and Sykesville.

When I became President of The Freedom Area Citizens' Council three and a half years ago, Sen. Kittleman attended my first meeting along with Del. Krebs. Since then that time I saw him only once more and that was to an event to which I had sent him an invitation.

Sen. Kittleman represents both Howard and Carroll County citizens.  I do not know what he has done for Howard County, but I can tell you that I know of nothing he has done for South Carroll and I am active in my community. He has brought nothing for South Carroll nor suggested any relief for our problems. He has never attended any meetings nor given a report at the end of each session. I stopped emailing him years ago since I never received a reply.

Now we will have someone who will also represent Howard County and the other foot in Carroll County for the House of Delegate in the 9th district. It would difficult for anyone who does not reside in South Carroll to know our needs and the back ground of our area.

There are over thirty thousand residents in South Carroll who will not be represented by anyone in the House of Representatives or the Senate who lives in our community. We will need to wait for another census to have a chance of representation after this new map takes effect. In those years we will not have representation or a voice and problems will not be addressed until there is a new map.

How can this be call representation when our voice is not heard? I find these new redistricting lines illegal. It certainly cannot be called “We the people”

I realize that each district must be comprised of the same numbers, but having followed redistricting in Carroll County the last two times, the lines only served those who now hold or want to hold office. The requests of the citizens were ignored.

On this new state redistricting map the numbers used to produce new areas, some are at the maximum and some are at the minimum numbers. This seems to be more political benefit than benefit to the voters.

Now once again district lines are being drawn to serve a few not the majority.
