Broken Gas Line Causes Police to Close Liberty Road, Evacuate Area Businesses
A gas line cut by contractors caused Liberty Road to be closed for more than two hours Wednesday.
A large diameter gas line was broken this morning by contractors and part of Liberty Road in Eldersburg was closed as a result, according to the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department.
Firefighters received the call around 9:30 a.m. and remained on the scene for about two hours. Maryland State Police were requested to close Liberty Road from Georgetown Blvd and Route 32 along with the main entrance to a shopping center, according to the fire department.
The four-inch high pressure line was broke in the 1300 block of Liberty Road near the PNC bank by a Bearcat left running. The bank was evacuated as were other buildings once firefighters arrived on the scene.

Firefighters in full protective clothing and breathing apparatus shut off the Bearcat to prevent the gas from having an ignition source.
There was a delay when BGE arrived in finding the shut off.

Firefighters monitored surrounding buildings for gas and no injuries were reported.
