Bull Shot, Killed in Carroll County After Charging Near Day Care Center

The animal charged at a Carroll County Sheriff's Deputy after escaping from a truck transporting the bull to a meat packaging plant.

This isn't what "free-range beef" is supposed to be. A bull being transferred to a meat processing plant in Carroll County made a run for it early Thursday morning, according to a press release. 

The Carroll County Sheriff's Department received a call to the 600 block of North Main Street in Mount Airy for a bull that had escaped while being transferred from a truck to a local meat processing plant. 

When a Sheriff's Deputy arrived on the scene they observed the bull charge an individual and then leave the area traveling in close proximity to a day care center.

The Deputy followed the bull to a field adjacent to the intersection of Prospect Road and Old Annapolis Road and attempts were made to confine the animal for the purpose of safeguarding citizens in the immediate vicinity, according to the release.

The bull charged at the Deputy who quickly entered his marked police cruiser. The animal then struck the rear of the vehicle, damaging the driver’s side tail light.

Additional attempts were made by Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputies to confine the bull when it again became aggressive and moved toward their location. 

Fearing for their safety, a Deputy discharged two rounds from a shotgun, striking the bull, and causing him to retreat into a wooded area, according to the release.

An officer from Frederick County Animal Control arrived on the scene firing two additional rounds from a rifle killing the bull.

No one was injured in the incident and the bull was released to the owner.
