Police said they have increased patrols in the area of Westminster where a man in a suspicious vehicle approached a child at a bus stop.

Police said that in the morning hours of Dec. 3, deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1300 block of Wyndale Rd. in Westminster for a report of a suspicious vehicle.

According to initial police reports, an older style construction work van pulled up near a bus stop and the driver engaged in conversation with a juvenile male at the stop.  The driver, described as a heavy set white male, asked the juvenile if he would like a ride to school, police said.

The juvenile refused and ran back toward his residence, according to police.

Police are investigating a report that the man may have exited the van and walked toward the area to which the juvenile ran.

Patrol deputies as well as uniformed deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Neighborhood Enforcement Team have been conducting frequent checks of bus stops in areas around and surrounding the lower Westminster and South Carroll area, according to police.

Since the reporting of this incident, police have not received any similar reports that would suggest there is a threat to students or other people, police said. Police said this appears to be an isolated incident.

Frequent patrol checks will continue to be made of bus stops, schools, and roadways throughout the county, police said.

If you see any suspicious activity, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office asks that you  contact 911 or the Sheriff’s Office directly at 410-386-2900.
