Police Say Second Suspect in Armed Robbery at Tuesday Morning Store Was An Employee

The suspect assisting in robbing Tuesday Morning retailers in Eldersburg at knifepoint earlier this month.

A second suspect was charged in the March 5 armed robbery of Tuesday Morning in Eldersburg, according to Maryland State Police. 

Matthew Joseph Santiago, 22, of the 300 block of Obrecht Road in Sykesville, turned himself into police at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Santiago, an employee of Tuesday Morning, conspired with Joseph Schmier, 17, to rob the store located in the 1200 block of Md. 26 in Sykesville. 

Santiago is charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, theft less than $1,000, and accessory after the fact.

According to an earlier press release, on March 5, Troopers were called to Tuesday Morning, a store in the 1200 block of Liberty Road around 7 p.m. where a lone suspect had entered the store, threatening two employees with a knife and demanding money. 

The two clerks handed the suspect an undisclosed amount of money from the two employees. He then assaulted one of the clerks before running away. A clerk suffered minor injuries.

Joseph Schmier, of the 7100 block of Jennifer Way in Sykesville, is charged with two counts each of armed robbery, first-degree assault and second-degree assault in addition to reckless endangerment, theft of between $1,000 and $10,000, theft of under $1,000. 

Schmier was charged as an adult in two incidents, including an armed robbery at the Gaither Market and Deli store located along the 7200 block of Gaither Road on March 4, in which Santiago was not involved, according to police.
