Sykesville Police Department 'On a Roll' Thanks to Donated Segways

The Montgomery County Police Department donated two of their Segway vehicles to the Sykesville Police Department.

The Sykesville Police Department now has two sets of new wheels thanks to the Montgomery County Police Department.

Capt. Alan Goldberg of the Montgomery Police Department has donated two Segway vehicles to the Sykesville Police Department, according to a press release.

"This is going to be a huge help with our special events, such as our Fall Festival, Concerts in the Parks, National Night Out and our Apple Butter Festivals," said Cpl. Lewis, of the Sykesville Police. "I am a big fan of personal contact between our officers and our residents and shop owners. These Segways can only help to bring us closer to our citizens and their concerns."

The Segways were obtained through a National Institute of Justice pilot program that Capt. Goldberg applied for to use in the Silver Spring Central Business District.

Capt. Goldberg has been a Segway instructor since the program's inception and has trained hundreds of police officers across the country in their use and safety.  Since then, their department has upgraded to a newer version of the Segway and donated two of their older units to the Sykesville Police Department, according to the release.

The Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric human transporter. Computers and motors in the base of the device keep the Segway upright when powered on with balancing enabled. A user commands the Segway to go forward by shifting their weight forward on the platform, and backward by shifting their weight backward.
