'Don't Place TV Boxes on the Curb,' And Other Holiday Safety Advice From the Sykesville Police

From locking your car to not placing flat screen TV boxes at the curb, Cpl. Dave Lewis tells consumers to "shop smart."

As last minute shoppers flood to the stores, practicing safe shopping habits becomes a necessity, according to Cpl. Dave Lewis of the Sykesville Police Department.

"Shop smart, a lot of people leave purchases in view while they go from store to store," said Lewis.

"As always, lock your car, even when you leave it for a minute, and don't leave valuables in sight. When you come back to your car, have your keys ready to go and be aware of your surroundings."

In addition, once purchases are brought home, it's important to remember to keep them out of sight to burglars.

"Don't leave purchases in your car once you get home," said Lewis. "After the holidays, an empty box for a 52 inch flat screen TV put out on the curb is an invitation to a burglar."
