Sykesville Police Search For Owner of Cremated Remains

The urn and human remains were discovered more than a year ago in Marriottsville.

The Sykesville Police Department is searching for the owner of an urn containing human remains that was discovered more than two years ago at Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

On March 10, 2010, a local resident contacted the Sykesville Police, saying she discovered a metal urn at the cemetery on Marriottsville Road.

"She said she found it in a group of weeds," said Cpl. Dave Lewis of the Sykesville Police Department. "She said she had taken it to the caretakers of the cemetery and tried to turn it over to them, but they would not accept it as it might be stolen."

There are no markings on the urn that appears to be a "brushed brass type of metal and it is relatively heavy," said Lewis.

The Sykesville police have kept the urn in their property room while they tried to locate where it came from. To date those efforts have been unsuccessful.

"My best guess would be that someone stole this thinking it was valuable and when they realized what it was, they ditched it," said Lewis.
