Debt Ceiling Deal Reached, Congress Set to Vote

The president announced a compromise Sunday, avoiding default.

The country will avoid default in the debt deal if a compromise announced by President Barack Obama Sunday passes in Congress and reaches the president's desk by Tuesday night, according to multiple news sources.

Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner called the president Sunday to say they have a deal, according to the Huffington Post

"While I'm glad the country isn't going to default, I still believe that ultimately the federal government should do what we do at the local level and what folks do at home, and that's balance its budget," said Carroll County Commissioner Haven Shoemaker, District 2.

"Since the feds don't have the fiscal discipline to do that, it's high time we have a balanced budget amendment to stop this nonsense."

The last-minute deal to be voted on Monday includes raising the debt ceiling and putting immediate spending cuts in effect to avoid national debt.
