Department of Parks and Recreation Announces Photo Contests

The Department of Parks and Recreation celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2011 and it wants the community to be part of the fun.

With more than 30 parks, thousands of acres of open space and dozens of programs serving thousands of residents, the Carroll County Department of Recreation and Parks has a lot to celebrate after 40 years in existence.

Department officials want the community to help with a year-long commemoration that they hope will highlight the important role parks and recreation play in people's lives. To participate, all you need is a camera and your own unique vision.

"We thought the photo contest was an excellent opportunity for everyone to participate in the anniversary celebration and recognize the different populations and interests served by the department," said Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Degitz. "It's a great way to highlight the many benefits of recreation and parks and the photographers who captured those moments – and we get to brighten up our web site with their winning entries."

Every month through 2011 there will be a theme for a photo contest. A winner will be selected each month and then a grand prize winner will be awarded at the end of the year. The photos will be used to promote Recreation and Parks programs throughout the year.

February's theme is "Winter in the Park" and the submission deadline is Jan. 1.

January's theme was "Indoor Activities" and Shawn Reese, Department of Recreation and Parks administrative associate, said three photos were submitted. The winner of the January contest will be posted on the Department of Recreation and Parks website early next week.

According to the department's web site, the contest is free and open to amateur and professional photographers. All photos must be taken at a Carroll County park location or at a Carroll County Recreation and Parks or Recreation Council activity. Individuals can only submit one photo per month. Contest rules and submission guidelines are available on the Recreation and Parks website.
