Speakout: Should Carroll County be Part of a New State?

A new initiative aims to create a new state made up of Maryland's five Western counties, including Carroll.

If you think Carroll County should break away from the state of Maryland and form a new state with four other Western Maryland counties, you're not alone. In fact a Facebook page, Western Maryland: A New State Initiative, has been created to get the ball rolling.

The Western Maryland: A New State Initiative Facebook page "is for discussion on forming a new state from the five western counties of Maryland," according to the site. The proposed new state would include Garrett, Allegany, Washington, Frederick, and Carroll County.

The About section of the page reads, "We intend to exercise our right of self-determination and self-governance to better secure our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Annapolis has repeatedly injured us and abridged or denied our fundamental rights and violated numerous articles in the Maryland Declaration of Rights. Our pleas for redress of grievances to the General Assembly and the Governor are ignored or rebuffed."

Started July 12 of this year, the Facebook page has 326 likes and has asked its followers to weigh in with ideas and feedback for the new state.

Talk of secession is not unique to Maryland.

Several Colorado counties are currently holding public meetings to gauge interest in creating a new state called North Colorado, according to the Huffington Post. And in 2012, the Huffington Postreported that residents in more than 30 states filed secession petitions with the "We the People" program on the White House website.

Tell us in comments -- do you think Carroll County would be better off forming a new state with other Western Maryland counties?
