Century Students Win With Their Distracted Driving Posters

The AAA Traffic Safety Poster Contest is promoted across the Mid-Atlantic region as a way to increase awareness and to reduce traffic and pedestrian crashes, the leading cause of death and serious injury among children.

For the contest, high school students were invited to create slogans and visuals that displayed categories relevant to teen driver safety, such as alcohol awareness and distracted driving. 

Century High School Sophmore Amy Elberfeld won third prize in the high school age division with her poster about driving while distracted.  She said she knows that many of her fellow students tend to eat and/or look at their phones while driving, so she thought it was an important theme to represent. 

Elberfeld clearly titles her poster ‘Don’t Drive Distracted’ and explained that the theme also worked well as a busy and eye-catching poster.

“I wanted to make it as visually interesting as possible and to help show the theme,” Elberfeld said. 

Elberfeld received a $100 gift card as her third-place prize.

Karah Yates, a junior at Century High School, won Honorable Mention with her poster showing distracted driving as well, with particular attention to driving while eating. 

After looking at her poster, she said she hopes people consider how distracting it can be eating drive-through food while driving.

“I hope they would consider parking somewhere to eat their food or else taking it home before they eat it,” Yates said.

Yates was presented with a certificate and an entertainment prize pack as her honorable mention prize.

Century Art Teacher Jeff Sharp admits that he would be happy to make this contest part of his class every year. The poster contest fits in perfectly with the commercial art lesson taught in the class anyway, while also helping to promote safe driving awareness.
