Community College Partners with Baltimore County Schools to Offer Free Classes to Students

Eligible BCPS students can take up to four free classes at the Community College of Baltimore County.

The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) is offering Baltimore County Public School juniors and seniors free classes as part of its "College 4 Free" program.

The College 4 Free Program is a new early college access program offered by CCBC for BCPS juniors and seniors with at least a 2.5 grade point average. The program allows students to take one college course for free each semester.

CCBC will cover 50 percent of the tuition for eligible BCPS students and BCPS will cover the other 50 percent, according to a program information sheet. Students will be responsible for covering all related CCBC fees and for books and supplies. Students eligible for free and reduced-price meals will not have to pay any CCBC fees.

"With the implementation of this new program, the tremendous value of a CCBC education has grown even greater for high school students in Baltimore County,” said Dr. Sandra Kurtinitis, CCBC president, in a statement. "We have effectively removed cost as a barrier to getting a head start in higher education. Taking four college courses for little to no cost is like having a full scholarship for your first semester at CCBC.”

Many of the more than 400 BCPS students already enrolled at CCBC this fall will benefit from College 4 Free. School system officials expect the number of participants to grow this spring as information about the program becomes widely available to students, according to a CCBC news release.

Students can choose among CCBC's general education and career program classes and can enroll in up to four classes (one per semester for their junior and senior years).

Want more information? There will be an information session from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16 at New Town High School in Owings Mills.

Students interested in the program should see their school guidance counselor as soon as possible as CCBC's spring classes begin Jan. 27.
