McDaniel in the National Spotlight, Recognized as a Top Tailgating School

McDaniel College is regularly recognized for its academic standing and cultural offerings, but when one thinks of college football and tailgating, McDaniel may not be one of the top ten colleges that come to mind.

Until now.

The Weather Channel has named McDaniel College one of the nation's top seven tailgating schools. The countdown-to-number-one show premieres on the Weather Channel at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

According to the McDaniel website, McDaniel College is the only college or university selected that is not a Division I school.

An article in the Baltimore Sun suggests that the school was chosen because of its unique "drive in" style bowl. The layout of the land allows people to literally tailgate, meaning they can stand at their cars (with chairs and tents and grills and tables of foods and coolers, etc...) and watch the game.

It only takes minutes to walk from student housing and dorms to the football fields. McDaniel College itself is a small, tightknit community and the geography of Bair Stadium allows that same camaraderie to flow into athletics. Tailgating at McDaniel football games is a tradition for many students, families and alums.

The McDaniel Green Terror football team fell to Franklin & Marshall 31-14 Saturday. But at least it was a crisp, fall day that made for perfect tailgating weather.
